Ashes

18 ...
Ash Wednesday, coming from acts of atonement and marking the beginning of Lent, behooves Christians around the world to reflect appropriately and in preparation for Easter.  The day of remembrance marks a returning to the Lord or perhaps a coming to the Lord for the first time.  At this time many Disciples of Christ recall their mortality and wait upon the Lord for a renewing Spirit.  Markings of a cross on foreheads with ashes on the first day of Lent are traditional symbols of Christian penitence; they represent death.  With ashes come the notions of a plant dying, becoming fertilizer when it rots, or when it is burned. The result of that death makes way for life, and that’s what happens when a believer’s sins die; it gives way to life in the Lord.
