At this time many Disciples of Christ recall their mortality and wait upon the Lord for a renewing Spirit. Markings of a cross on foreheads with ashes on the first day of Lent are traditional symbols of Christian penitence; they represent death. With ashes come the notions of a plant dying, becoming fertilizer when it rots, or when it is burned. The result of that death makes way for life, and that’s what happens when a believer’s sins die; it gives way to life in the Lord.
