Learn2Read

27 …
Fear dims when you learn to read and access information you need for day-to-day life.  When you could put together sounds of letters, call out the word it makes, and then associate meaning to a word, you have conquered illiteracy.  You learn that you no longer live in darkness.  Life around you blossoms.  Everything printed in your environ begins to make sense.  You no longer feel awkward or shiver when your daughter or son asks you to read aloud a book he/she wants to hear from your very own voice.  You do not have to ask your third grader to accompany you to your bank and have her/him read and explain to you the information you must input so that you may withdraw and deposit money.  You do not have to carry a book or a rolled newspaper under your armpit to pretend you are able to access information just like everyone else on the bus or the subway.  Asking someone else to read something for you because you ‘forgot to bring your eyeglasses’ no longer has to happen.  You gain new confidences, and likely feel smart and brave when you are able to pull yourself out of misery and constant fear of being found disabled.  When you learn to read, information access becomes second nature in your lifelong learning.
